Do you ever feel the urge to just make something really ugly? Or to just to create a mess on the page without trying for it to look “good” or “perfect”?

While I’ve definitely loosened up my art style over the years, I still consider it to be quite “clean,” and I prefer it that aesthetic.

But sometimes I just want to rage on the page or just scribble, doodle shapes, or fill a whole page with random colours.

Getting out my pastels recently has been really freeing and fun! I think allowing ourselves to create “ugly” things is key to creating beauty as well.

So I encourage you to do it, too! Here’s how:

1. Choose a medium you don’t often use
2. Get a sketchbook or paper that isn’t precious to you
3. Pick a subject you don’t usually paint or draw
4. Make marks on the paper without the intention for it to look good or share it with anyone
5. Enjoy the emotional release and creative flow!
6. Repeat as needed

My first time painting the Sydney Opera House ✨💕

You’d think after all the time of living here, and many years of having a painting practice, I would have attempted it before… but I was honestly scared and thought I wouldn’t be able to pull it off. Here’s why:

1. I don’t sketch or draw. For a long time I thought I couldn’t possibly ever draw something so complicated. Plus, I don’t like drawing and usually just jump right into painting. I thought that approach wouldn’t work with this.

2. Paintings like this need planning. I don’t have the patience to do that.

3. It won’t fit my style jn watercolour, I’ll have to paint it in oils and I don’t currently have the setup for that.

You know what? It turns out I was wrong about all three! I chose to start small so it was less overwhelming. On a small paper I had less room to get confused about proportions. I started painting without a sketch or planning it out, like I always do. I put down a solid background in the colours I love. I stopped worrying and just painted. What do you think about how it turned out?

Now I’m officially obsessed to finally work on a new range… Stay tuned! ✨💕🌊

My first big art market stall, exactly one year ago today 🤯 What a whirlwind life has been since then! If you’ve been following my stories over the last 12 months, you know I spent the year slow travelling to a few of my favourite places, hanging out with (almost) all of my favourite people! From giving up my apartment in Germany, to travelling to Koh Samui to see my brother again after 4 years (!), to my beloved Sydney, a summer in Germany, and now fulfilling a lifelong dream of being in New York, it’s been an absolutely incredible year!

Thank you to all of you who’ve stuck around, and all who have supported me while the business was taking a backseat. I’m so grateful for each and every one of you 🥹 I’ve been working on setting up the shop again for many months and now we are back open for business! I’m more than ready to pursue this and many more of my art business dreams in the coming year and beyond, I truly can’t wait!
